The Romance

The Romance is a collection inspired by personal family story of traditional crafts, their contrasts, and similarities. I wanted to bring together stories of my great-grandad, Roman and great-grandma, Halinka, who were both craftspeople. My great-grandad was making everyday use objects and tools out of metal and wood. He was treating materials in a rough way, creating simple shapes which main focus was practicality and durability. My great-grandma was working with textiles and embroidery. Her collars, tablecloths, head-ware pieces were always ornamental and served decorative purposes.

I treated the objects I designed as a result of the metaphorical „romance” between craftswoman and craftsman. I took the materials out of their usual context and used embroidery patterns as technical drawings and inspirations for form and function.

Each piece in the collection is an ode to a certain pattern or piece that my great-grandma Halinka created expressed in my great-grandpa’s Roman material. The softness of embroidery became a conceptual reference to address the roughness of metal and wood.

In some detail elements I referred back to the original tactility and softness of embroidery by introducing minimal textile elements to the pieces. I wanted to reverse the original function of the thread which my grandma used for creating ornamental patterns and use textiles in a simplistic way to combine the furniture parts.
